IJA and IJN made a cooperative operation called 'Ketsu-go' for the first time. The formal name of the operation was 'Teikoku riku-kaigun sakusen keikaku taikou.' There is an island called Tanegashima in the south of Kyushu. US planned invasion here. How was the defense force of IJA? Ground forces were 7 infantry battalions (678th, 679th, 680th, 681st, 682nd, 683rd, 684th), 26th battalion, 109th brigade (engineering corps, communications corps, medics). The troops was 6,000 to 12,000. The defens positions had been built since September 1944. The maps show the deployment in July 1944 and April 1945.
